The automatic water economiser has a solenoid valve (1) that bypasses the existing filling control valve. The solenoid valve is controlled by an electronic module. The cistern is normally filled to a first level, with a reduced quantity of water sufficient to flush liquid waste away. To fill to higher water level needed to flush away solid waste the user may be required to push a button, or alternatively in a more automated version the time that the user occupies the toilet is monitored and determines whether the higher fill will be initiated. Optionally, a pump may be activated to bring water recycled from the rinsing cycles of a washing machine or a dish washer.
