A method for making a frequency converter including a substrate made of a ferroelectric material in which surface ferroelectric polarisation inversions are periodically caused in order to meet quasi-phase tuning requirements. The method includes rapid annealing at a temperature adjacent to the Curie point of the material in the presence of a light source transmitting at lambda i, and depositing a material (ma) on the ferroelectric substrate. Said material (ma) is more absorbent at wavelengths lambda i than the ferroelectric material, and enables the desired periodic polarisation inversions to be induced.
