PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having excellent durability over a long period of time even under a wide environment from a high temp. to a low temp., high reproduced output, a good taking-up characteristic of a raw sheet and excellent process adaptability. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is constituted by providing the surface of a base with >=2 layers of constituting layers including magnetic layers. The film thickness of the magnetic layer of the uppermost layer is <=1.0μm. The center line average height (expressed by Ra, nm) and max. roughness (expressed by Rt, nm) of the base are 12<=Ra<=28, 95<=Rt<=220, Rt/Ra<=10. The layer in contact with the underside of the magnetic layer is so formed as to contain fatty acid ester.
