PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the most of us of performance of a thin film magnetic tape by making the gap length of a reproducing magnetic head larger than the gap length of a recording magnetic head. SOLUTION: A medium is a thin film magnetic tape and a signal is recorded- reproduceD by using a ring type magnetic head. In this case, the gap length of a reproducing magnetic head is made larger than the gap length of a recording magnetic head. Preferably, the gap length of a recording magnetic head is <=0.17μm, the gap length of a reproducing magnetic head is <=0.20μm and preferably moreover, the saturated magnetic flux density of a magnetic material composing the neighborhood of the gap of a recording magnetic head core is <=1.0T. The saturated magnetic flux density of a magnetic material composing a trailing edge is made larger than that of a magnetic material composing a reading edge.
