[Also in Group XXVI] A machine for sawing lengths from a tube A issuing from a shaping machine comprises a rotatable holder 3 on which one or more saws 1 with self-contained driving units 16 are mounted, a rotatable notched drum 4 for supporting the tube and a grooved roller 10 bearing resiliently on the tube and drivingly connected to the holder 3 and drum 4 so that the peripheral speeds of the drum and of the cutting edges of the saws about the axis of the holder are equal to or slightly greater than the linear speed of the tube. As shown, there are four saws 1 and the drum 4 is driven at half the speed of the holder 3 so that each saw during cutting penetrates one of a pair of notches 67 in the drum. A leafspring 46 holds the tube against the drum and a support roller on a fixed stand 53 engages the opposite side of the tube from the driving roller 10. The holder, the drum and the driving roller are mounted on a plate 38 hinged at 52 and acted on by a spring-loaded catch so that the roller is pressed yieldingly on the tube; the catch is pivoted at 59 on the stand 53 and can be swung out of a notch 55 in the plate 38 so that the plate can be pivoted to allow placing of the tube between the rollers. The driving units are turbines comprising a stator 27 with oblique or tangential holes 17 through which air in a chamber 18 impinges on radial holes 32 in the rotor 16. The chamber is supplied through passages 33, 35 an the hollow shaft on which the holder 3 rotates. Radial apertures 31 in the clamping plate 24 for the saw act as a centrifugal air brake on the turbine and an eccentric extension 28 on the stator extends through a bore in a boss 29 on the holder so that by rotating the stator the radial extension of the saw can be adjusted.</p> |
