A lubricating oil containing an ester of an alicyclic polycarboxylic acid represented by general formula (I), wherein A represents a cyclohexane or cyclohexene ring, R<1> represents hydrogen or a methyl group, X represents hydrogen or COOR<4>, Y represents hydrogen or COOR<5>, and R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, and R<5> represent each a branched alkyl group having 3 to 18 carbon atoms. This lubricating oil has a good hydrolysis stability and is suitable for use as a lubricating oil for metal working, a lubricating oil for a refrigerator, and the like.
