The invention concerns a braking system (10) comprising at least one brake circuit (I) in which a high-pressure pump (20) is disposed. A self-priming charge pump (36) is also provided and is connected by an intake pipe (39) to a brake fluid supply container (12) and by a pressure pipe (41) at least indirectly to the intake side of the high-pressure pump (20). When the brake fluid supply to the charge pump (36) is defective, no air should be fed to the brake circuit (I). To this end, the intake pipe (39) of the charge pump (36) comprises a siphon (40; 54-56). Air drawn in through the siphon (40; 54-56) stops the feed to the charge pump (36) in an abrupt manner. The braking system (10) is intended for use in motor vehicles with slip control or for automatic braking.
