The apparatus includes a transmission (3) having a number of gear ratios. There are at least one external ratio selecting member, at least one internal gear shifting member and a connection between the external and internal members. A monitoring device includes at least one sensor (9,11) having device for transmitting first signals denoting changes of at least one variable parameter of at least one component of a number of components (10,13,12) including the at least one external member, the at least one internal member and at least one element of the connection. A control unit has device for processing the first signals and for generating second signals as a function of the first signals. A device adjusts the system in response to the second signals. The at least one component is a mobile component and the variable parameter is the position of the mobile component. The clutch is a friction clutch.
