A method for long term inhibition of scale in a brine downhole in a well. An effective amount of an N-phosphonomethylated polymer of an epihalohydrin and an amine selected from the group consisting of alkylene diamines, di-alkylene triamines and tri-alkylene tetramines, in an epihalohydrin to amine molar ratio of from about 0.6:1 to about 2:1, the polymer having a molecular weight of from about 500 to about 40,000, is squeezed into the well.
