Adaptive control for automobile IC engine relative to emissions control system output variations

The engine management system monitors the performance of the engine against set parameters and measures the differences between the expected settings and the actual measured settings; this provides a measure of the state of the catalytic converter, when compared with reference values. The engine management control can then be adjusted to take account of the deterioration of the catalytic converter. Engine parameters which are monitored include the ignition timing setting, the engine speed at set throttle settings and the heating system for the catalytic converter ( for cold starting). The control system can estimate the temperature of the catalytic converter and adjust same to maintain the effectiveness of the converter.
