A cryogenic gas and/or liquefied gas storage container has spaced outer and inner containers defining an interspace, through which emptying and filling lines pass and in which are arranged several individuals insulation layers, each consisting of at least two mats. The gaps(14.1 to 14.6), which are free of insulating mats, are provided between the butt joints(30-41) of the insulating mats(18-29) of an individual layer. Preferably, each gap is covered by an adjacent individual layer and the gaps are located in the transition region(42) from the container bottom to the cylindrical outer casing of the container(10). The interspace (14) is preferably evacuated and the emptying and filling lines(15,160 pass through a tube(17) which is concentric with the central longitudinal axis of the container.
