The documentation and control method uses a ferromagnetic memory device for each item in which specific coded data is recorded, via a magnetic write head (4) at a first documentation position, and scanned by a read head (6) for verification. The coded data is read out at a subsequent processing station via a magnetic read head (7), with a further write head (9) at a second documentation point positioned after the processing station. Each of the magnetic heads is coupled to a central information processing computer (5).
