The insert is placed at the rear of the vehicle below the rear hatch and has a floor panel and sidewalls depending from the panel at right angles. The panel has support feet (23) on the free edges of the sidewalls which are shaped to fit the uneven floor of the vehicle compartment and provide a horizontal surface extending over the compartment floor. The height of the support feet can be selected to match that of the vehicle tailgate so that the insert top surface is flush with the gate top edge.
