Part of the energy input is converted in the internal combustion engine (1) into exhaust energy in combination with a Stirling engine (3) and one or more micro-heat-exchangers (2). These are coupled to the internal combustion engine exhaust line (1b) in which the waste heat heats up the working gas of the Stirling engine. The waste heat line includes both the exhaust line and a line branched off the cooling system. The differential gear (4) between Stirling and internal combustion engines is supplemented by a flywheel energy storage switched in between Stirling engine and differential. Fuel and air are fed to the engine by line (1a), and the exhaust line is led off to a first exchanger where the Stirling gas is heated in counterflow on the hot side of the exchanger.
