A power driven floss (1) comprises a pair of spaced tines (42) having rollers (41, 43, 54) for guiding floss to move along each tine (42) in order to form a movable floss span between bulbs (50) at end portions of the tines (42). The tines (42) are pivotally supported for moving laterally and vertically. Means are provided for reciprocating the tines (42) vertically and for reciprocating the floss span longitudinally. A spring (48) urges the tines (42) to move laterally apart to an open position. A pair of engaged sector gears (46) are fixed to each tine (42), respectively, so that lateral movement of the tines (42) is symmetrical. The spring (48) is adjusted such that when the moving floss span encounters tooth resistance, floss tension increases to overcome the spring force and move the tines (42) toward a closed position. Hence, the tine bulbs (50) close in on a target location and follow the opposing vertical grooves between teeth to guide the span into and through an interdental space. The bulbs (50), which contain rollers (54), are mounted to swivel so the floss span can move in any direction. Thus, the span can wrap around a tooth and reciprocate laterally and vertically thereat.
