A method of coating substrates with a ceramic high temperature superconductor layer, by means of the sol-gel process of US 3330697 (Pechini process), involves: (a) producing a solution; (b) forming a sol; (c) forming a gel; (d) coating the substrate; (e) firing the gel in a suitable (preferably oxygen-containing) atmosphere; and (f) synthesising the superconductor layer in a suitable atmosphere.
