5-formylthiazol is advantageously produced by reaction of a 2-halogen-malone-dialdehyde compound of formula (II), in which R stands for hydrogen, an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal equivalent and X stands for fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine, with thioformamide in the presence of less than 5 wt.% water (relative to the total reaction mixture).
