A photocopier includes scanning means (2-8 and 12) responsive to the primary colours of an image on an original on a sheet platen (1), and printing means (23-25) for process colours complementary to the corresponding primary colours of said scanning means to apply colouring medium such as toner of the appropriate process colours to a carrier (8) to define a multi-colour image on the carrier. A processor (26) generates respective signals to counters (23a, 24a and 25a) indicative of the consumption of the respective process colouring media or toners. The process and apparatus may be applied to a digital photocopier or to an analog photocopier.
