A unit (1) for supplying layers (2) of cigarettes (3), wherein a supply outlet (6), presenting an open bottom end (13) and a number of channels (15) converging towards the bottom end (13), feeds a succession (7) of layers (2) of cigarettes along the channels (15) to the bottom end (13); and an extracting device (17) is associated with the outlet (6) to expel the layers (2) one by one in an extraction direction (22) parallel to the cigarettes (3) in the layer (2) and on to a fixed pickup plate (18) presenting a bottom surface (23) for releasably retaining the cigarettes (3) in a single layer (2). <IMAGE>
