PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily produce a saccharide ether useful as a raw material, etc., for a base for cosmetics, arm emulsifying agent, an oil, a medicine, an agrochemical, etc., at a low cost by reacting saccharides or their derivatives with alcohols or their derivatives in the presence of a rare earth-based catalyst. SOLUTION: Saccharides represented by formula I (A is a residue after removing hydroxyl group at the 1-position from the saccharides or their derivatives; B is H or an acyl) or their derivatives are reacted with an alcohol represented by formula II (R is a 1-36C alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cholesteryl or cholestanoyl or a residue after removing all the hydroxyl groups from a saccharide chain or its derivative; D is H or trimethylsilyl; (z) is the number of hydroxyl groups when R is the residue after removing all the hydroxyl groups from the saccharides or their derivatives and is 1 when R is other groups] or their derivatives in the presence of a compound represented by formula III (M is a rare earth metal ; R<f> is a perfluoroalkyl or a perfluoroalkoxy) and a rare earth-based catalyst such as a fully fluorinated rare earth ionomer to afford a saccharide ether represented by formula IV. |
