The method is for drying nuclear fuel loaded into a fuel rod which has an encapsulating tube provided with a bottom and a top plug. The top plug is provided with a filling hole for moisture expulsion, which is promoted by heating with the rods placed in an evacuated chamber where they are heated to a predetermined temp. over a specific period. The moisture expulsion and the sealed welding of the filling hole are carried out automatically, without the dried fuel being exposed in the interim to damp, involving the following stages: (a) the fuel rods are transferred in gps. to a magazine at a loading station, (b) the magazine is fed into the evacuated space in the form of a heating chamber in which the rods are heated and the heat is maintained to expel the moisture, (c) the magazine is transferred to a cooling chamber to cool the rods, (d) the magazine is then transferred to a handling chamber where the rods are removed and one by one are fed into a chamber for sealed welding. |
