A panel comprises the following layers : (A) at least one first layer (1) containing a polymer material ; (B) at least one second layer (4) forming a panel surface layer ; and (C) at least one third layer (5) between (A) and (B), comprising a heat-resistant material used to protect (A) against fire or high temperatures. The polymer material for (A) is a composite foam comprising a cured resin, fibrous material and expanded thermoplastic particles. Preferably (C) comprises an inorganic fibre material, especially mineral wool. The panel also contains one layer including a flame retardant material, preferably an endothermic material which releases a cooling component (especially water) upon exposure to heat, most preferably aluminium hydroxide. The fibrous material in the composite foam comprises inorganic (preferably glass or mineral) fibres. Inorganic material (e.g. glass) particles or beads are present in (A). Also claimed are (a) panels used in buildings, containing at least one layer (A) with internal channels (6, 7) extending in the plane of the panel between opposite panel edges, for removing gases created by thermal degradation of the panel material at high temperature, and (b) a method for improving the resistance of panels in buildings to fire, flames or high temperatures, using the above panels, whose channels are formed by assembling two or more layers (2, 3, 9) with grooves in them. |
