When the item of furniture is assembled the pieces are located in three different non-parallel planes. The pieces are connected to one another by a union which connects the support piece and the base-piece so that the former can be pivoted in relation to the latter. A further union permits the intermediate piece to be pivoted in relation to the base-piece. The item of furniture has lock devices which when it is assembled locks the pieces relatively to one another so that it can be exposed to loads during use.
