The crutch (1) has a handle (5) and three supporting bars (11) which unfold to prevent it tipping over when set down on the ground (13). The bar ends furthest from the ground form extension-pieces (17) which are actuated by a push-and-pull rod (27), and during extension the pivot bearings of the extension-pieces are held nearly upright on the main crutch (7). The extension-pieces can be arranged to slide in the vertical direction under the action of the rod, which is preferably housed inside the crutch. Two locking devices can be provided, to secure the extension mechanism in the extended and folded positions.
