The detector which detects for the presence of a child seat (3) on the front passenger seat (2), comprises a measuring device determining the angle at which the upper belt (10a) unrolls from a guide roller (11), and the angle at which the lower belt (10b) unrolls w.r.t. the same guide roller. An electronic comparison circuit (20) compares the measured angles with predetermined values. As a result of the comparison, the operation of a safety airbag (5) in the front dashboard of the vehicle is inhibited when the presence of a child seat is detected. A visual indicator on the vehicle dashboard illuminates when the child seat is correctly installed and the airbag is disabled. When the straps extend at a different set of angles, corresponding to the presence of a normal passenger, the airbag is capable of operation. |
