Identification of bacteria from their peptidoglycan hydrolase content

Identification of a bacterial sample comprises: (a) isolating peptidoglycan hydrolases (A) from the sample; (b) allowing (A) to migrate through a gel containing a substrate for (A); (c) developing bands corresponding to (A); (d) comparing migration distances and shapes of the bands with similar stored data, obtained under same conditions on the same gel for known strains or with molecular weight markers, and (e) identifying the species in the sample from the comparison.
