Chromene compounds and photochromic materials

Compounds of formula (1) wherein R<1> and R<2> are defined heterocyclic or naphthyl groups and R<3> and R<4> are hydrogen or defined substituents, and materials comprising these compounds are photochromic, having low initial colour, excellent durability, high colour density and high colour fading rates.
