The invention concerns a reciprocating engine with several cylinders in which a closed compression space is formed beneath each piston by dividing the crankcase into compartments at the crankshaft bearing by means of intermediate walls. The gases entering the compression spaces, which can have a pressure from one to several atmospheres, are compressed and expanded during movement of the pistons. The purpose of the invention is to reduce the mechanical loads, weight and vibration of a reciprocating engine with several cylinders and relieve the rotating mechanical weights in so doing. This is achieved according to the invention in that the gases that are compressed accumulate energy in the piston moving downward and release this energy when the piston moves upward and thus replace the energy that it accumulated in the rotating masses. The average pressure of the gas is controlled according to the load conditions of the engine. <IMAGE>
