In a Michelson interferometer, plane mirrors (41, 42) of a mirror element (4) are of circular or elliptical shape, have the same diameter and are firmly fixed as an adjustable distance (d) from each other. With reference to the mirror element central plane, the beam splitter (1) is arranged on one side and two end mirrors (51, 52) are arranged on the other side of the mirror element (4) in such a manner that the beam splitter plane lies between the plane mirrors (41, 42) and bisects the angle which is enclosed by the two end mirrors (51, 52). Furthermore, the axis of rotation (7) of the mirror element coincides with that of a drive shaft (70) which is firmly connected to the outside of one of the two plane mirrors (41, 42) of the mirror element (4), and which can be driven at constant angular speed by means of a motor.
