The invention relate to an electrolyte cell with a terminal anode and a terminal cathode and bipolar cell elements which are situated between the outer cell elements provided with said terminal anode and cathode. Said bipolar cell elements are connected in series to the outer cell elements and to one another, and each cell element has one or two gas diffusion electrodes one of which also forms the top of the electrolyte chamber immediately beneath it and the floor of the electrolyte chamber immediately above it. The terminal anode and the anodes of the bipolar cell elements have a perforated electrode structure of high electrical conductivity. Electrolyte and reaction gas such as oxygen are fed to each electrolyte chamber and a mixture of electrolyte and the resulting product and reaction gas is drawn off from each electrolyte chamber. The cell elements are assembled in a stack and the terminal cathode and the cathodes of the bipolar elements have a perforated support wall of high electrical conductivity on each of which rests a gas diffusion electrode. The overflows in each of the top cell elements are height-adjustable.
