The invention concerns a safety belt retractor having a winding shaft (1) for a safety belt webbing (4), a controllable blocking device (9) for the winding shaft (1), and a force limiting device (43), which is active after the blocking device (9) is triggered, for belt webbing extension which is operative over a limited length, wherein the winding shaft (1) is arranged on a mounting shaft (2), the force limiting device (43) is arranged between the winding shaft (1) and the mounting shaft (2) and is operative upon a relative rotary movement as between the winding shaft (1) and the mounting shaft (2), and there is provided a coupling device (50) for releasably coupling the winding shaft (1) and the mounting shaft (2). A belt tensioner (16) which acts on the mounting shaft (2) can be provided on the safety belt retractor.
