A winding unit for a textile machine that produces cross-wound packages has a drive roll equipped with yarn guide grooves, and a yarn guide component (10). The component (10) has a yarn guiding outline (16) which provides for even and gentle changes in direction. The apex (15) of the outline (16) is laterally dislocated in relation to the middle plane of the drive roll towards the position of the yarn collecting pocket (17). The yarn guide component (10) is introduced into the yarn running path from the front in such a way that the yarn (6) is deflected on to a vertical plane running underneath the drive roll.
