To condition image data, particularly in accordance with the block-matching method, two memories (SRD, SSD) are provided which in each case temporarily store the image data of a reference image block and of a search block. The image data of the memories (SRD, SSD) are logically combined with one another via comparison units (V1, V2, V3, V4) in such a manner that in each case one group of search positions within the search block can be simultaneously analysed in one processing step. Those blocks of the memory (SSD) for the search block which are not currently needed for the block matching can be updated. The implementation according to the invention allows the conditioning of compressed image data with predetermined speed requirements and/or a predetermined, particularly reduced, hardware complexity.
