A control system for vehicle drive has an IC engine, a motor/generator joined to the output shaft of the latter and which is used either as an electric motor or regeneratively as a generator, a battery to store the energy recovered from the wheels by the motor/generator and to provide electrical power for the motor/generator during motor operation, a coupling between the motor/generator and the wheels, a device to ascertain a "holding state" of the car and a controller for the engine, the motor/generator and the coupling so that when this state occurs, the coupling is disengaged. Fuel is supplied to the engine at a certain rate, lower than when idling.
