Sulphonated aromatic polyether-ketones (PEK) of formula(II) are claimed, in which 1-100% of the -O-phenylene-CO- units are substd. with a SO3M gp., with sulphonated and unsulphonated -O-phenylene-CO- gps. in any sequence -(Ar-O-Ar'-CO-Ar'-O-Ar-CO-Ar"-CO)- (II) Ar, Ar', Ar" = opt. substd. 1,2-, 1,3- or 1,4-phenylene; M = H, NR4<+> (with R = H or 1-4C alkyl), or an alkali or alkaline earth metal or Sub-Gp. 8 metal, pref. H, NR4<+>,Li, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe or Pt. Also claimed are: (i) a process for the prodn. of (II); (ii) a polymeric electrolyte soln. contg. (II); and (iii) film with a thickness of from 5 microns to 1 mm contg. (II).
