Elastic materials (8.1) in mixed with metallic materials (8,2) in a composite material (8) are separated in a process in which the material is placed in a tank (2) with liquid nitrogen (4) by a conveyor (6). The embrittled material is broken up by a high-power pulse (9) produced by an electrode arrangement (3) and is separated by the pressure pulse resulting from the high-power pulse. Preferably, the electrode arrangement can be moved over the composite material and is single-pole, the insulated tank acting as ground electrode. High-energy-power pulse preferably has an energy of 200 to 1200 J.
