Method of charging coke oven with coal

A bottom-heated coking oven is filled with coal by a method in which the coal outside the oven is dumped on to a base plate at uniform height and then compacted, the plate and compacted coal cake being pushed into the oven chamber. The plate is then removed. The coal cake is 500-1000 (600-800) mm high. Also claimed is an operating machine, which can be moved along a row of adjacent coking ovens, having a base plate (3) of the dimensions of the oven base which forms a shallow and large-area coal filling and compaction chamber with side walls (9, 10) and front and rear side walls. When the coal is charged into the oven chamber, the rear end wall and the base can be moved in the longitudinal direction jointly with the base plate.
