A heating element for a cooker conforms to the area of a pot and consists of a conductive film applied to a substrate, e.g. an enamelled steel plate which is embedded flush in a cooktop. The conductive film may act alternatively as a temperature sensor for controlling the power in periods when the power is disconnected.
