An emulsion polymerization method which comprises emulsion-polymerizing tetrafluoroethylene in the presence of a polymerization initiator, a paraffin wax having a content of reducible substances of 100 ppm or lower, and an emulsifying agent; and a method for preventing irregular tetrafluoroethylene polymerization in the emulsion polymerization method. The methods attain a constant polymerization time and yield a polytetrafluoroethylene having physical properties meeting the intended standards.
