The chair comprises a seat surface and a back rest (14) which is adjustable with the angle of inclination. The arm rest (20) has a support part (22) which is pivotable around a horizontal axis (18) arranged on one side of the back rest and is releasably fixed to the axis. A guide part (26) of the arm rest is slidably guided along a static guide (24). The guide part is shaped so that the support part executes a translatory movement when it pivots around the axis. The guide part has an evolvent shape and connects to the front end (28) of the support part. The support part locates on the axis under friction and is secured by a cap (30) applied to the axis end. The axis has a ring groove in which a securing ring is fitted. The support part fits on the axis by overcoming the resistance formed by the securing ring.
