The length of monomode optical fibre (14) is unwound from stationary reel (12) while its behaviour is tested. One end of the fibre is connected directly to a first optical transceiver (16) incorporating a laser and broadband photodetector. The fibre is coiled on a drum (20) rotated by a motor (22). The taut length (26) of the coupler expressed in metres is at least 1/150 of the maximum number of turns. It is terminated with a second optical transceiver (24).
