A method and device for backing up a system image, which are independent of the operating system, are described. The method and device have particular applications to data processing systems, particularly data processing systems which are battery-powered and/or microprocessor- based. In the currently preferred embodiment of the present invention, a BIOS parameter table and an interruption of the BIOS parameter table are supplied to a data processing system comprising a central processing unit CPU. A measuring area located in the bulk store is reserved for storing an image of the data processing system. The BIOS parameter table is initialized to describe the net storage capacity and the reserved area. The interruption of the BIOS parameter table indicates the start position of the BIOS parameter table.
