Reducing the amount of radiation emitted by a boiling water (BWR) nuclear reactor comprises the addition of hydrogen to the reactor water in order to prevent corrosion forming stress cracks in parts of the reactor that come into contact with the water. The reactor water comprises first and second media, the first medium flowing along at least one channel between the fuel rods (2) in the reactor and being mixed with the second medium, whose purpose is to reduce the energy of the neutrons present in the reactor core. - Also claimed is a nuclear reactor fuel cartridge using this arrangement, where at least one channel for the first medium is formed between the fuel rods and these channels are separated by partitions (4) from the second medium, except for regions where there is at least one hole (13) in the partition to allow the two media to mix. - Preferably the first medium comprises water, especially steam, whilst the second medium also comprises water and contains highly volatile nitrogen compounds containing the 16N isotope. |
