The monitoring method involves assigning an individual counter to each virtual connection, their momentary count values detected, to indicate a transmission bit rate above the defined rate when a given count is reached. A global counter records the number of information cells transferred via the virtual connections, summated with the count value provided by each individual counter for comparison with a min. value, to indicate the incorrect transmission bit rate when the sum is below the min. value.
