PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a new compound useful as a perfume intermediate. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I (R is a 1-3C alkyl) and, e.g. ethyl tricyclo[5.2.1.0<2> ,<6> ]dec-8-ene-2-carboxylate is cited. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by carrying out the Diels-Alder reaction of a cyclopentenylcarboxylic acid ester represented by formula II with cyclopentadiene. The cyclopentadiene is used in an amount of preferably 1-10mol based on the compound represented by formula II and especially preferably 1-2mol based thereon for the purpose of suppressing side reaction. The part of the C-C double bond in the compound represented by formula I is reduced to afford a tricyclo[5.2.1.0<2> ,<6> ]decane-2-carboxylic acid ester represented by formula III. Furthermore, the compound represented by formula III is useful as a perfume and is obtained by remarkably improving the operating efficiency and productivity as compared with those of the conventional Koch carboxylating reaction. |
