An optical recording medium comprising a phase change recording layer and a dielectric layer on a substrate is improved in reliability during storage at elevated temperature when the recording layer has a composition of the following formula.[{(Ag,Au)a(Sb,Bi)b(Te,Se)c}1-d(In,Al,P)d]1-eMeLetters a to e are: 0<a </=0.20, 0.6</=b<1, 0<c<0.40, a+b+c=1, 0<d<0.06, and 0</=e</=0.20. The recording layer should have an activation energy of at least 3.0 eV as determined from the crystallization temperature versus heating rate of the recording layer sandwiched between dielectrics.
