PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element with excellent characteristics (specially, ferroelectric liquid crystal display element which has an excellent contrast and is easily increased in area) and to provide the method for easily manufacturing the liquid crystal element in a short time at low cost. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal element, constituted by arranging a couple of base bodies 22a and 22b provided with electrodes 23a and 23b and liquid crystal orientation control layers 24a and 24b opposite each other across a specific gap and arranging liquid crystal 26 in the said gap, has plural grooves 50 formed on its internal surface brought into contact with the liquid crystal 26; and the section of the said internal surface along the grooves is formed of repeated asymmetrical saw-tooth shape projection parts 51 and the radius of curvature of a recessed part formed of the groove 50 is <=0.1μm at right angles to the groove 50. Then this element is manufactured by cutting a prototype for forming the grooves 50 and projection parts 51 by laser irradiation. |
