IMAGE ENCODER AND VARIABLE LENGTH CODING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a circuit scale of a digital video coding system. SOLUTION: The system is provided with a conversion table (ROM array) to which a different variable length code is allocated depending on combinations between a run length and a level of non-zero data. When an image signal subject to run length conversion in the unit of blocks is given to the ROM array, coded data are outputted therefrom depending on the input signal and length data representing a length of the coded data are outputted. A multiplexer 540 generates a predetermined additional code depending on the length data and the code is added to the coded data and the resulting data are outputted so that the ROM array dose not require caring about the additional code and then the circuit is simplified.
