PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface acoustic wave(SAW) device, for which lithium tantalate monocrystal is used for substrate materials, having the extremely satisfactory filter characteristics of high attenuation quantity out of passing band and low insertion loss. SOLUTION: This device is composed of lithium tantalate monocrystal and an interdigital electrode 4 composed of a metal film is formed on a substrate 3 whose main side is a Y cut plane rotated at 33 deg.-39 deg.. Then, the standardized film thickness of interdigital electrode 4 satisfies the condition of 0.103<=H/λ<=0.193 (λ: wavelength of SAW to be propagated to substrate 1 and H: film thickness of metal film to form interdigital electrode 4).
