PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent control from being unstabilized due to the frequent switching of judgement of abnormality/normality in a controller for judging the abnormality of a sensor or the like and/or restoration to a normal state and switching engine control from normal control to fail-safe control or reversely switching. SOLUTION: This controller judges the abnormality of an NE sensor for generating a pulse signal at the time of detecting the projection 3 of an NE pulser 2 pivoted around a crankshaft 1 when the number of pulse signals from the detection of a toothless part 4 up to the succeeding detection does not coincide with the number of projections 3, executes fail-safe control, and at the time of detecting a tooth lacked part 4, judges the normal restoration of the NE sensor when a cylinder can be detected based upon a pulse signal from a G sensor provided around a camshaft 5 to execute normal control. When the normality/abnormality of the NE sensor is frequently switched, normal restoration is judged only when the judgement of abnormality is not formed. Consequently the frequent switching of normality/abnormality can be prevented and control can be stably executed.
